This guide follows Oxford’s independent coffee scene from central cafés to neighbourhood roasteries. The comparisons use the cafés’ own information. We haven’t reviewed drinks or service.
Society opens at 7.30am on weekdays if you’re after an early coffee. NewGround’s Ship Street café and wine bar stays open later than Missing Bean on Turl Street. For plant-based brunch, Green Routes has a kitchen open until 3pm and takes walk-ins only.

Thirteen independent coffee stops
Browse by area or find a café that roasts its own coffee. The “Roaster-run” label applies to the business, so roasting may happen at a different branch.
The original Turl Street café serves seasonal house espresso and a changing range of single-origin coffees. There are sandwiches, cakes and beans to take home.
Bear in mind: For a later weekday coffee, NewGround on nearby Ship Street stays open longer.
The flagship café looks towards the University Church and Brasenose, with hot drinks, cakes and bags of beans. The coffee is roasted at the separate Osney Mead site.
Bear in mind: Osney Mead is the branch to visit for the working roastery. High Street is closer to the main sights.
An independent café just off Cornmarket, near Gloucester Green. It opens earlier on weekdays than the other central cafés listed here.
Bear in mind: The weekend start is later, at 9am.
This Ship Street café and wine bar has the latest closing times among the central cafés listed here. The Headington workshop is a separate branch.
Bear in mind: If you’re coming in the evening for coffee or food, ask when that service finishes.
The Covered Market café serves Colombian coffee roasted in Wheatley, among the market’s food counters and independent shops.
Bear in mind: The market’s trader listing gives later Monday–Saturday starts than the operator’s website, so ask the café before an early visit. Its website also warns of queues, so leave extra time before a timed booking.
Routes Coffee’s flagship on Magdalen Road serves speciality coffee and plant-based brunch. Allow for the journey to East Oxford if you’re staying in the centre.
Bear in mind: Tables are walk-in only. The kitchen closes at 3pm, an hour before the café.
The Newtec Place café is close to Missing Bean’s bakery and roastery on Magdalen Road. This is the East Oxford branch, separate from the Turl Street café in the centre.
Bear in mind: The café opens at weekends, but the wholesale roastery and online-shop office open on weekdays only.
NewGround’s workshop and café is on Windmill Road in Headington, away from the central coffee walk.
Bear in mind: It closes at 3pm on weekdays, earlier than the Ship Street branch.
This Banbury Road branch opens earlier each day than the Covered Market café. You can combine a visit with Summertown’s independent shops.
Bear in mind: If you’re visiting the central colleges, the Covered Market branch is closer.
Coffee is roasted here at Osney Mead. The café has indoor and outdoor seating, beans and brewing equipment to buy, and a children’s play area.
Bear in mind: The café closes at 2pm on Saturdays and is closed on Sundays. The High Street branch opens on Sundays.
The outdoor Horsebox on the museum lawn serves Dark Horse Roastery coffee, handy for a break between the Museum of Natural History and Pitt Rivers Museum.
Bear in mind: For a sheltered break in poor weather, head to an indoor café.
The Horsebox sits beside the river inside the Botanic Garden, so you can stop for coffee during a garden visit.
Bear in mind: You’ll need garden admission. A street café is simpler if you’re only after a coffee.
The seasonal outdoor Horsebox serves visitors to Harcourt Arboretum in Nuneham Courtenay, outside Oxford. Plan your transport before setting off.
Bear in mind: Arboretum admission applies. Service is listed as spring to autumn, with no exact end date, so ask before an autumn trip.
Central coffee walk
This walk links Turl Street, St Michael’s Street, Ship Street, the High and the Covered Market. Stop for a cup or pick up beans wherever takes your fancy. You don’t need to visit all five.

The Missing Bean roasts in East Oxford, Jericho Coffee Traders at Osney Mead, and Colombia Coffee Roasters in Wheatley. Their cafés also sell beans to take home.
