Oxford’s college lanes, museums and market are easier to enjoy once the car is parked. For most day trips, use the Park & Ride on your approach to the city. If you need central parking, you can reach Westgate via Botley Road without crossing a traffic filter.

Oxford has three separate road controls: traffic filters, bus gates and the Zero Emission Zone. A permitted route to a car park does not exempt you from other restrictions. Plan your arrival and return before setting off.
Choose one Park & Ride on your approach and use the council’s site information for its location. Check its onward bus and the return service before setting out.

From the north and north-west
Pear Tree and Oxford Parkway
Pear Tree sits by the A34/A44 interchange on the north-western approach. Oxford Parkway is farther north, beside the railway station at Water Eaton. From London & the East
Thornhill Park & Ride
Thornhill is on the A40 near Headington, convenient for arrivals from London and the east. Its local buses connect with the centre and other Oxford destinations. Use the Park & Ride departure page to find your bus. Airport and London coaches have separate tickets.
From the South & West
Redbridge and Seacourt
Redbridge is on the southern approach off Abingdon Road. Seacourt is on Botley Road for arrivals from the west. Botley Road has reopened, with direct Seacourt buses into the centre. Check the return stop and last bus before making an evening of your visit.

Traffic filters, bus gates and the ZEZ
The traffic-filter trial replaced the £5 congestion charge on 28 September 2026: a car needs a valid permit to cross an active filter. Separate bus gates still restrict certain streets. The ZEZ is a charging scheme on specified central roads, not a pass through bus gates or filters. Follow the signed restrictions and the council’s maps.

Westgate for central parking
Westgate’s underground car park uses Thames Street, OX1 1TS, as its sat-nav destination. Plan the approach via Botley Road, Hollybush Row and Oxpens Road. The postcode alone may send you along a restricted route. Payment is card-only, the height limit is two metres and roof boxes are not permitted. The £3 combined Parking & Bus ticket covers up to 16 hours’ parking for one car and return travel for up to five people of any age travelling together. Select that option at the machine or in RingGo and show the ticket/session on both buses. It covers local services entering the site, not adjacent stops or airport/London coaches.
The ZEZ is separate: charges apply 7am–7pm daily and currently range from £0 for zero-emission vehicles to £10, according to vehicle band. Check your vehicle and the mapped roads if your intended route enters it.

Can I drive to central Oxford?
Yes, but plan a permitted route to your destination. Westgate confirms access via Botley Road without crossing a traffic filter. Park & Ride is simpler for many day trips. Other road restrictions still apply if you drive into the centre.
Which Park & Ride should I choose from London?
Thornhill usually works for the A40 and arrivals from the east. Check that its onward bus serves your destination before driving around Oxford to a different site.
Can I pay a charge to cross a traffic filter?
No. The £5 congestion-charge option ended on 28 September 2026. A car needs a valid permit to cross an active filter. ZEZ charges and bus-gate restrictions are separate.
Does the £3 ticket include all buses?
It includes qualifying local journeys into Oxford from stops within the five Park & Ride sites and the return. It excludes Airline and Oxford Tube coaches, adjacent stops and journeys away from Oxford. Longer parking or additional passengers need separate arrangements.
