How to choose

Less ticking off.
More settling in.

Oxford’s pub scene makes most sense by neighbourhood. Start with where you will spend the day, then choose a place that fits the company and the appetite. The directory combines venue information and individual CAMRA records; the suggestions below are starting points, not a ranking or a claim that we have recently eaten at every table.

A traditional pub lunch

For a first Oxford visit

The Turf Tavern suits a wander through the college lanes; The Bear is a compact stop near the High Street. Both make more sense as a pause in your day than as destinations to rush between. At busy times, be flexible about tables.

For a relaxed meal

Choose The White Rabbit for pizza in the centre, or head to the Chester Arms for a neighbourhood dining stop. The important Sunday detail: Chester Arms roast service is walk-in only. Check the pub’s own guidance rather than assuming you can reserve.

For an escape from the centre

The Punter puts Osney on the itinerary, while The Perch is a natural partner for a Port Meadow walk. The Trout is farther north in Wolvercote: give it its own outing. Leave time for the return journey and check paths after wet weather.

For a neighbourhood afternoon

Use the Jericho filter for Walton Street and its backstreet locals, or Headington for Old Headington, Quarry and Risinghurst. Cowley & Florence Park covers stops farther southeast, including the Marsh Harrier and Jolly Postboys. The Iffley filter separates village and towpath destinations from the pubs nearer town on Iffley Road.

Same name, different pub

There are two Gardeners Arms in this directory, on North Parade and Plantation Road, and two White Harts, in Headington and Wolvercote. Check the street before sharing directions. Oranges & Lemons is the former Angel & Greyhound; Slow & Steady was the White House. They are listed once under their current names.

Before you go

Opening hours and kitchen service are not the same. Check current menus, ask directly about allergies and step-free access, and confirm arrangements for children or dogs. You do not have to order alcohol to make a pub part of your day; plan a safe journey home.
