Oxford can be expensive, but its greatest trick is how much of the good stuff remains free: dinosaur skeletons, ancient art, riverside meadows and the city’s best architecture from the pavement.
Build a day around two museums and one long walk. You will see more and spend less than anyone sprinting between ticket desks.
General museum admission is free, though donations matter and temporary exhibitions may charge.

The Ashmolean
Start at Britain’s first public museum. Pick one floor or theme rather than attempting half a million years of human history before lunch.
Natural wonders
Museum of Natural History
The neo-Gothic glass court is reason enough to enter; dinosaurs, minerals, insects and the Oxford dodo take it from there.
Through the back doors
Pitt Rivers Museum
Enter through Natural History and keep going. The dense, atmospheric anthropology displays reward curiosity and repeat visits.
Fresh air
Christ Church Meadow
Walk beside the Cherwell and Thames with college towers over one shoulder and rowing boats over the other.
Wide horizons
Port Meadow
Oxford’s ancient grazing land feels improbably wild. Go for a long sky, a riverside path and a different view back towards the spires.
Books & buildings
Weston Library and Broad Street
The Weston’s public exhibitions are free; outside, Broad Street, the Sheldonian and Radcliffe Square deliver a fine architecture walk.
