Dough, fire and a little Italy
Authentic pizza
in Oxford.
A focused shortlist of Italian independents and wood-fired sourdough, from Cowley Road to the Covered Market.

Authentic is more useful when it describes a style than when it crowns a winner. Here are three Oxford places with a clear pizza identity—and how to choose between them.
Il Principe explicitly describes its pizza as Pizza Napoletana; La Smorfia traces its cooking to Neapolitan family roots; Sartorelli’s specialises in wood-fired sourdough. Those are different reasons to visit, not interchangeable badges.
This shortlist is researched from the businesses' own information, not a blind tasting or a claim that our editors have eaten every pizza in Oxford. The order below is not a ranking.
Three places to start
Find your
kind of slice.
Cowley Road · Neapolitan style
Il Principe
At 82 Cowley Road, Il Principe advertises Pizza Napoletana made with handmade dough. Its Italian delicatessen background makes it a strong starting point if you want a pizza-led outing in East Oxford. Check its own menu for the current topping selection; our suggested starting order is a simple Margherita so the dough and tomato take centre stage.
Cowley · Italian family cooking
La Smorfia
Founded by mother and daughter Rosa and Denise, La Smorfia describes its Neapolitan roots and a menu spanning pizza, pasta and desserts. Consider it for a sit-down meal with a group whose appetites differ. That recommendation is about menu breadth and stated tradition, not an independently verified pizza certification.
Covered Market · Wood-fired sourdough
Sartorelli’s
Find Sartorelli’s at units 24–25 in the Covered Market. Its stated speciality is hand-shaped, wood-fired sourdough pizza. The Oxford shop is walk-in only, with shared market seating that cannot be reserved: a good fit for a flexible central lunch, less so for a large group needing a guaranteed table.
Editor’s note
Good pizza deserves a little time.
For a city-centre sightseeing day, keep lunch in the market. For an East Oxford evening, choose a Cowley Road restaurant and make that the destination rather than rushing between all three venues.
Allergies and dietary needs deserve a direct conversation with the venue about ingredients and preparation. A menu label is not a guarantee about shared ovens or cross-contact. Check opening hours and arrangements directly before travelling.
