You don’t need an expensive commercial tour agency to experience Hogwarts in Oxford. With a little advance planning, you can walk straight into the real-world cloisters, staircases, and libraries where Harry Potter was filmed.
Oxford's ancient collegiate architecture provided the atmospheric backdrop for the first four Harry Potter films (Philosopher's Stone through Goblet of Fire). From the grand stone staircase where Professor McGonagall first greeted the first-years to the sunny quad where Mad-Eye Moody turned Malfoy into a ferret, the locations are remarkably well preserved.

Hogwarts Staircase & Hall Inspiration
Christ Church: Bodley Staircase and Great Hall
Enter through Meadow Gate into Christ Church. The soaring fan-vaulted Bodley Tower staircase was the setting for Harry, Ron, and Hermione’s first arrival at Hogwarts in Philosopher’s Stone, as well as the reunion scene at the end of Chamber of Secrets. Directly above lies Christ Church’s magnificent Tudor Great Hall; while actual filming took place on a replica set at Leavesden Studios, the hall’s portraits, hammerbeam roof, and long trestle tables directly inspired the Hogwarts Dining Hall.
Hogwarts Infirmary & Ballroom
The Bodleian Library: Divinity School
Completed in 1488, the Divinity School is the oldest purpose-built teaching room in Oxford, renowned for its intricate stone ceiling bosses. In Philosopher’s Stone and Chamber of Secrets, it served as Madam Pomfrey’s Hogwarts Infirmary (where Harry wakes up after defeating Quirrell). In Goblet of Fire, it was the rehearsal room where Professor McGonagall taught Ron and the Gryffindors to waltz for the Yule Ball!
Restricted Section & Library
The Bodleian Library: Duke Humfrey’s Library
Situated directly above the Divinity School, this 15th-century medieval reading room served as the Hogwarts Library. Harry donned his invisibility cloak to sneak into the Restricted Section here in Philosopher’s Stone, and Hermione searched for information on Nicholas Flamel and Polyjuice Potion among its chained tomes. Access requires booking a guided Bodleian Library tour.
Malfoy's Ferret Tree & Cloisters
New College: Cloisters and Quad
Tucked behind Holywell Street, New College boasts breathtaking 14th-century perpendicular Gothic cloisters. In Goblet of Fire, Harry navigates the cloisters amidst peers wearing 'Potter Stinks' badges. In the adjacent quadrangle stands the colossal 200-year-old holm oak tree where Mad-Eye Moody (Barty Crouch Jr in disguise) magically turns Draco Malfoy into a bouncing white ferret!

Christ Church tickets must be booked online well in advance, particularly during peak summer months and bank holiday weekends. Walk-in queues can exceed 90 minutes.
To see Duke Humfrey's Library, you must book the Bodleian's 30- or 60-minute guided tour; standard visitor admission only grants access to the Divinity School ground floor.

Is the Great Hall in Christ Church the real Hogwarts Hall?
The filmmakers did not shoot inside the actual room to protect the historic site, but they photographed and measured it meticulously to build a near-exact replica at Warner Bros Studios Leavesden. Visiting Christ Church Hall feels identical to standing in the movie dining hall.
How much does it cost to visit the Harry Potter locations in Oxford?
Expect around £18–£20 for Christ Church, £3–£10 for Bodleian Library tours (the Divinity School alone is £3), and £8 for New College. Walking between them through the historic city streets is completely free.
Where is the tree where Malfoy was turned into a ferret?
